Christ-Roi Saint-Basile Monument
Winner of the 2025 Canadian Association of Heritage Professionals Award of Merit in Conservation Engineering.
This project preserved the 1933 Christ-Roi monument at the Hôtel-Dieu Saint-Joseph Provincial Historic Site in Saint-Basile, New Brunswick. The beloved local landmark stands at the entrance to the site and marks the longstanding presence of the Religious Hospitallers of Saint-Joseph in the community. Years of water damage, cracking, and material loss had left the early concrete structure in poor condition, pushing the owners to consider demolition.
HSI first assessed whether the monument could be repaired within the limited budget of the local, non-profit owners. After evaluating past deterioration and performing materials testing, the team was able to create a repair design that did not require specialized conservators to travel to the remote location. HSI then worked closely with a local mason throughout construction, guiding the type of careful conservation process that is often reserved for larger and better funded heritage sites.
