Doucet Hennessy House Rehabilitation
Sitting on Village Hill overlooking the Baie de Chaleur, the wood-frame Doucet Hennessy House has been a Bathurst landmark for nearly 200 years. A local and Provincial Heritage Building, the house is currently owned by a not-for-profit association. Heritage Standing Inc. is assisting in revitalizing the house as a community centre while ensuring historic value is preserved. HSI assessed multiple aspects of the house, from the building site and structure to accessibility and fire safety. The strengths and weaknesses of the structure formed the basis for creating two conceptual designs that provide the greatest flexibility for future uses. The Doucet Hennessy House has the potential to be a catalyst to counter high local unemployment and youth out-migration, while accelerating community pride and engagement.
