St. John’s Anglican (Stone) Church

This National Historic Site was facing mounting structural challenges combined with a limited budget.  Heritage Standing Inc. used a conservation-based approach to reduce construction while maintaining safety.  Solutions included minimally invasive interventions and installing an innovative real-time structural health monitoring system.  This minimal and focused approach allowed the church to continue to serve its community while construction was phased over an achievable period.  A 10 year master plan was also created, allowing the church to communicate with stakeholders and potential funders as partners in long-term planning.  More recently Heritage Standing has been providing ongoing design and construction support for phased repairs.  The risks often associated with historic buildings, such as unknown conditions, frequent design changes, time delays, and specialized repair techniques, have been mitigated by using an integrated design approach, prioritizing collarboration between the design team, trades people and the owner.
