Old Saint John Courthouse

A designated National Historic Site, the Old Saint John Court House was built in 1826 to 1829 of unreinforced masonry and timber.  Circa 1920s additions include reinforced concrete slabs and beams for interior floors and a steel structure in the attic space.  The building was being assessed for its potential to house a theatre company, including including creating an onsite performance venue.  A not-for-profit group procured an architect-led feasibility study, for which Heritage Standing Inc. provided structural and heritage expertise.  Services included reviewing character defining elements and explaining associated restrictions, assessment and evaluation of structural systems using...

Morrison Holdings Buildings Global Condition Assessment

Morrison Holdings Ltd. owns six historic buildings in the core of downtown Fredericton.  Constructed during the 19th and early 20th centuries, the buildings are a mix of masonry, brick, concrete, and wood framing and have been subject to numerous alterations.  Heritage Standing Inc. provided an extensive Level One Condition Assessment of the buildings, evaluating damage and prioritizing the necessary repairs to facilitate long term planning.  We have also assisted with multiple construction and rennovation projects.  The G.E. Halifax Firehall Conservation Support

Halifax Firehall No. 2 was built in 1908 using the relatively new (at the time) Portland cement-based concrete for construction of the walls.  The condition of the exterior walls had become a concern, and an existing condition assessment was required.  Heritage Standing provided specialized conservation support to the lead engineers, including recommendations for next steps and the identification of potential conservation approaches for preserving the walls.

Gulf Fisheries Building

This 1948-1949 stone façade building is a designated Federal Heritage Building, recognized for its historical and cultural significance as the Collège Notre-Dame d’Acadie, which was a college and boarding school for Acadian women until 1964.  Currently housing a division of the Department of Fisheries and Oceans, Heritage Standing Inc. supported an architecture firm to provide a structure and envelope condition assessment, including non- and minimally invasive testing.  The assessment was part of a larger feasibility investigation of the potential rehabilitation of the Gulf Fisheries building.  Heritage Standing Inc.'s assessment provided the basis for prioritized recommendations of...

Hanwell Little Recreation Building

After acquiring a local historic wood church, the municipality moved it to a popular recreational area and then requested Heritage Standing Inc. to undertake a condition assessment and design concepts for potential use.  HSI evaluated the physical needs of the 1930s wood-frame building and, through a series of in-person engagements, also evaluated how the building’s structure could meet the values and needs of the community.  Detailed conceptual designs and layout drawings were presented to the municipality to enable them to make well-balanced decisions regarding the future uses of this historic building.

Doucet Hennessy House Rehabilitation

Sitting on Village Hill overlooking the Baie de Chaleur, the wood-frame Doucet Hennessy House has been a Bathurst landmark for nearly 200 years.  A local and Provincial Heritage Building, the house is currently owned by a not-for-profit association.  Heritage Standing Inc. is assisting in revitalizing the house as a community centre while ensuring historic value is preserved.  HSI assessed multiple aspects of the house, from the building site and structure to accessibility and fire safety.  The strengths and weaknesses of the structure formed the basis for creating two conceptual designs that provide the greatest flexibility for future uses.  The Doucet Hennessy House has the...
