Former Penniac Baptist Church

Winner of the 2019 Canadian Association of Heritage Professionals Award of Merit in Conservation Engineering, the former Penniac Baptist Church is a pre-1850s light wood structure, moved to its current location and placed on a dry laid stone foundation around 1864. Minister’s Island

Minister’s Island is a National Historic site that showcases the 1890-1915 estate of railway magnate Sir William Van Horne.  The estate is comprised of numerous timber frame and load bearing masonry structures, including the 50 room summer “cottage” known as Covenhoven, a large livestock barn designed by architect Edward Maxwell, and a circular bath house built on the transition between the island and the Bay of Fundy.  Passing through multiple owners in its recent history, the Minister’s Island buildings are in varying states of conservation.  Heritage Standing Inc. began by providing a global assessment and prioritization of the buildings most in need of attention.  Heritage...

St. John’s Anglican (Stone) Church

This National Historic Site was facing mounting structural challenges combined with a limited budget.  Heritage Standing Inc. used a conservation-based approach to reduce construction while maintaining safety.  Solutions included minimally invasive interventions and installing an innovative real-time structural health monitoring system.  This minimal and focused approach allowed the church to continue to serve its community while construction was phased over an achievable period.  A 10 year master plan was also created, allowing the church to communicate with stakeholders and potential funders as partners in long-term planning.  More recently Heritage Standing has been providing...

Beinn Bhreagh Hall Summer Home

Winner of the 2021 Canadian Association of Heritage Professionals Award of Merit in Conservation Engineering, this 1890s stone masonry and wood frame building was constructed for inventor Sir Alexander Graham Bell.  It was used as a family summer home and a gathering site for some of the most famous intellectuals of the time.  The building required a cohesive vision of conservation to avoid unnecessary destruction of its character and value.  Heritage Standing Inc. undertook extensive non-destructive assessment to design innovative, minimal, and reversible solutions to ongoing deterioration.  Applying a conservation approach maintained the value of the building and reduced overall...

ICOMCOS Mission to National History Park, Haiti

Principal Engineer Dr.Tom Morrison was part of the ICOMOS Mission on behalf of UNESCO to the National History Park of Haiti.  With the assistance of UNESCO and the World Bank, the Haitian Government hoped this early 1800s UNESCO World Heritage Site, a complex of stone masonry ruins and military fortifications, could be developed into a revenue-generating tourist destination.  Heritage Standing Inc. provided an efficient and rigorous on-site assessment, collaborating with the tourism sector to demonstrate the value of implementing conservation best practices.  After this initial stage, Heritage Standing Inc. continued as a member of the UNESCO review and advisory team....

Emergency façade stabilization, St. Andrews

The St. Andrew’s Land Company Building was built in 1889 to house the offices of the company that developed the community into a resort town.  It is a local historic place, constructed with a timber frame interior and unreinforced load bearing exterior masonry walls.  Heritage Standing Inc. supported the contractor and owner by providing alternative solutions to a costly and value-reducing re-construction.  This project won the Canadian Association of Heritage Professionals 2018 Award of Merit in Conservation- Engineering.
